Harpers Ferry sits at the meeting point of the Potomac and Shenandoah rivers, surrounded by wooded hills and historic buildings.
Start in the national historical park's Lower Town, where you can visit museums and learn about John Brown's raid, the Civil War, and the town's industrial history. Active visitors can hike toward Maryland Heights for a panoramic view, while families can stick to the historic district and riverside scenery.
Lower Town parking is limited, so the National Park Service recommends parking at the main visitor center and taking the shuttle, which runs every 10 to 15 minutes when the park is open.

Annapolis offers historic streets, sailboats, Chesapeake Bay views, and plenty to do without too much itinerary planning.
Walk around City Dock and the historic district, tour the Maryland State House, or visit the U.S. Naval Academy (be sure to check current identification and security requirements). Add a harbor cruise or sailing excursion if you want the day to feel more like a vacation.
The compact downtown also makes it easy to browse shops, stop for seafood, and finish with ice cream near the water. Annapolis combines a walkable historic district with waterfront attractions and a lively restaurant scene.
