Grateful Dead tribute band Easy Jim returns at 8 p.m. Friday, Nov. 28, at Belly Up Aspen. “We’re a Grateful Dead band, but we have our own style — that’s what sets us apart from other local groups,” Carbondale-based drummer Ben Wright said. Paula Poundstone will perform at 7 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 29, at The Wheeler Opera House. “Laugh off the holiday pie” with the iconic comedian, known for her smart observational humor and spontaneous wit. John Kadlecik, a Washington, DC-area singer, songwriter, and musician, is primarily known for being a guitar-slinging sideman to Grateful Dead members Phil Lesh and Bob Weir in the band Furthur. The Arts Campus at Willits welcomes Dark Star Orchestra’s original co-founder to the stage. Kadlecik has focused on improvisation while touring across the country throughout his 20-year career. You can’t turn back time, but you can relive the songs that made the 1990s music so popular to this day. This live cover band will spin tunes from retro classics all night long. Despite the cooler weather, there are still opportunities to enjoy the outdoors without snow. Community members can join winter birding from 8 to 11 a.m. Dec. 2 at Hallam Lake, and join ACES the first Tuesday of each month, November through April, to learn about birding. Participants will have the opportunity to refine identification and field craft skills. Learn about non-breeding plumages, winter foraging strategies and behaviors of migratory and resident birds. Naturalist Rebecca Weiss will lead the outing, the author of “Birds of Aspen,” among her many accomplishments. All levels are welcome. Advanced registration is required. It’s that time of year when baking is at its best. Gingerbread construction will take place from 5:30-8:30 p.m. Dec. 3 at Colorado Mountain College Aspen Morgridge Teaching Kitchen, 0255 Sage Way. Decorations are provided, but guests are welcome to bring their own. Course registration closes at noon on the day of the class. Chef Kristi Keasler will be leading the class. Aspen Film presents December’s monthly Indie Showcase as part of the Winter of Cinema series. “The Seed of the Sacred Fig” will screen from 7 p.m. Dec. 4 at the Aspen Film Isis Theatre. Director Mohammad filmed the crime, drama, and thriller picture entirely in secret. The story follows a family whose life changes when a man named “Iman” gets a new job as an investigating judge in Tehran. When protests break out across the city, Iman discovers his work is more dangerous than he thought. The pressure makes him suspicious of everyone around him, including his wife and daughters. This Filmfest favorite was chosen by German as its official entry for the 2025 Academy Awards in the Best International Feature category. The run time is 168 minutes.
