Austin's hotel prices rank 17th highest in the world, according to a recent survey.

Hotel guests in Austin can expect to pay significantly more for a centrally-located, three-star or better room than in many other global destinations, according to a new survey.

A study released this month by travel website CheapHotels.org found that the average nightly rate in Austin during October is $184 for a double room in a downtown or central hotel.

That price puts Austin ahead of major U.S. markets such as Chicago ($176) and San Diego ($175), and nearly on par with many European capital cities.

The survey reportedly evaluated 100 cities worldwide, including 25 in the U.S. and Canada, during the month of October. Only centrally-located hotels rated at least three stars were included. Rates were collected in late September through booking websites.

The most expensive city globally in the survey is Boston, at $375 per night, followed by New York City at $338 and Zurich, Switzerland, at $274.

Austin is far ahead of other Texas cities on the list. Dallas ranked No. 45 with an average price of $139, while Houston came in at No. 47 and $137.

On the lower end of the scale, the survey listed Phnom Penh, the capital of Cambodia, as the least expensive destination at just $31 per night.
