Coastal Carolina University has been honored with a silver-level Bicycle Friendly University award from the League of American Bicyclists, the premier grassroots advocacy organization that encourages better bicycling and protects the rights of cyclists. The recognition highlights the institution’s achievements in promoting and enabling safe, accessible bicycling on campus.
"We’re honored to be once again recognized as a silver-level Bicycle Friendly University," said Jody Davis, director of university recreation. "Since first earning our silver designation in 2019, we’ve continued to invest in bicycle infrastructure, education, and safety initiatives that make it easier and more enjoyable for students and staff to ride on campus. This recognition reflects our ongoing commitment to sustainability and to building a campus culture that values health, community, and active transportation."
Being a Bicycle Friendly University has strengthened CCU’s connection with the surrounding community and enhanced the quality of campus life. The Coastal Cycles program, which provides more than 200 free bicycles to students for semester-long use, has helped reduce traffic congestion, improve air quality, and promote a more active lifestyle. Additionally, the University offers bike repair stations, air pumps, safety education events, and registration drives that help students and employees feel confident and supported when riding.
The Bicycle Friendly University program includes 204 colleges and universities in 42 states and the District of Columbia. It is part of the league’s Bicycle Friendly America program, which also awards communities and businesses with certifications as part of its mission to make bicycling safe, comfortable, and more accessible for all.
