WASHINGTON (TNND) — Democratic lawmakers on Monday demanded answers from Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem regarding reports on unlawful detainments of American citizens by Immigration and Customs Enforcement.

“It was reported last week that more than 170 U.S. citizens have been detained by federal immigration agents in the last nine months, a count that includes nearly 130 citizens arrested for allegedly assaulting or impeding officers (charges that often are dismissed or wilt under any scrutiny), and more than 50 citizens held after federal immigration agents questioned their citizenship,” Sen. Dick Blumenthal, D-Conn., and Rep. Robert Garcia, D-Calif., wrote in a letter to Noem.

The lawmakers said that this increase of racial profiling, specifically against Latinos is concerning.

They provided examples of individuals who were detained by ICE who they said were legal citizens but had their citizenship questioned.

Blumenthal and Garcia requested information and documents from Noem to get more information on the situation.

The deadline given for Noem to turn over the information and documents is Nov. 3.

They requested a “detailed description of training ICE and CBP agents receive concerning how to determine whether an individual is a U.S. citizen” and a list of all U.S. citizens detained by ICE or the Department of Homeland Security since President Donald Trump took office.

“The Committee on Oversight and Government Reform is the principal oversight committee of the House of Representatives and has broad authority to investigate “any matter” at “any time” under House Rule X,” the lengthy letter reads.
