We recently invited the candidates running for local office in the Nov. 3 General Election to write a post about why Arlington residents should vote for them. Find information on how and where to vote here.
Below is the unedited response from Don Beyer, who is running for House of Representatives 8th District.
My name is Don Beyer, and I am seeking your vote in this year’s midterm election to continue representing you in the U.S. House of Representatives.
The last two years have been hard for our Northern Virginia community.
In 2024 President Trump ran for a second term promising to lower inflation and avoid foreign wars. The American people are paying the cost of his dishonesty with skyrocketing prices and an illegal war that has no end in sight.
Promises of a “golden age” for America have turned into a waking nightmare of high inflation, the wholesale destruction of essential government agencies and their workforces, attacks on our neighbors, and serious threats to our democratic system and the rule of law.
Trump’s Republican allies in Congress are enabling his tariffs, supporting his disastrous war, slashing health care for working people, abetting his attacks on immigrants and federal workers, and turning a blind eye to some of the worst corruption ever seen in this country.
Republicans do not have the courage to stand up to Trump, which means fixing his mess will require returning control of Congress to Democrats.
We have an agenda that is ready to go on day one, beginning with measures to end Trump’s foolish war with Iran, repeal his tariffs, lower health care costs, and rein in this administration’s violent immigration enforcement.
I am also working with colleagues to craft regulatory responses to the rapid emergence of artificial intelligence, an area on which I am a leader in the House. I am doing all I can to support federal workers and others wrongly harmed by this administration. And I am continuing to deliver vital help and assistance for the people I represent via my superb constituent services team.
