Fairfax schools consider eliminating Christmas, other religious holidays from days off

FAIRFAX COUNTY, Va. (7News) — Parents have been pressuring Fairfax County Public Schools to make changes to the school calendar in order to get more instructional time for students.

Now, the district is asking parents what days off should be eliminated, and that could include major religious holidays such as Christmas or Rosh Hashanah.

7News obtained an email sent to parents asking them to weigh in on several possible changes to the calendar.

"Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS) values your input as we plan future school calendars. You are invited to complete a brief survey to share your priorities and perspectives, which will be considered as part of the calendar planning process. Your feedback matters, and we appreciate you taking a few minutes to respond," the message reads.

One of the questions on the survey reads: "If the school calendar required modifying one of the following, which would be the most acceptable to you?"

Other questions on the survey ask parents to rank the importance of observing religious holidays or maintaining the current length of time for winter and spring breaks. Parents were also asked whether they were satisfied with the current school calendar.

None of the proposed cuts to the calendar includes teacher work days or school planning days.

This all comes as parents have complained because fewer than half of the school weeks have five days of instruction time in Fairfax County Public Schools.

Fairfax County School Board members tell 7News they’ve received thousands of messages from parents to add more five-day school weeks.
