WASHINGTON (Gray DC) - Day 24 of the now second-longest government shutdown in U.S. history saw federal workers missing their first full paycheck.
Friday morning, D.C.’s Urban Outreach hosted a food giveaway for federal workers, partnering with the Capitol Area Food Bank to give each furloughed household a box of shelf-stable goods and produce. The two organizations planned for around 300 households to show up.
One worker who didn’t want to be identified was one of the first to show up, saying she had heard they were giving out food and thought she would check it out.
“This is a long time, you know,” she said about the shutdown. “I’m a very optimistic person, so I hope this will end soon.”
Rev. Wil Stroman, executive director of Urban Outreach, said his team usually gives food out on Saturdays. But they added in an extra day during the shutdown to help those not getting paid.
“Some are missing meals, some are missing a lot of things in their regular lives,” Stroman said, “so it’s part of why we’re here.”
Up on the Hill, lawmakers are continuing the stalemate; not moving any closer to a deal. The main concern among Democrats is still healthcare, with the November 1st open enrollment deadline inching closer.
“We hit open enrollment and Republicans have still refused to act with respect to the Affordable Care Act tax credits,” explained House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D, NY) Friday. “I think that’s going to increase the intensity and need for urgent legislative action to take place.”
Meanwhile, Republicans and the Trump Administration are showcasing the pain of a shutdown - with federal workers, including air traffic controllers, caught in the crossfire.
U.S. Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy has this to say at an event for air traffic controllers: “Hakeem Jeffries, Chuck Schumer, Bernie Sanders, they’re all going to get their paychecks while these men and women who control our skies aren’t going to be paid because of the shutdown.”
