GILBERT STERLING

Gilbert W. Sterling, 103 of Brilliant, OH, passed away Monday December 8, 2025 at Sienna Skilled Nursing and Rehabilitation in Wintersville, OH.

Gilbert was born on August 4, 1922, in Mt. Pleasant, Oh, son of Rev. Delbert Wesley Sterling and Elsie Louise (Pyle) Sterling. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife of 78 years, Mildred A. (Cain) Sterling on June 24, 2021; a brother, Alvin J. Sterling; four sisters, Margaret (Paul) Smith, Ethel (Donald) McHugh, Alice (Charles) Moore, and Wilma (Stewart) Frazer; and daughter-in-law, Jane (Green) Sterling.

He graduated from Brilliant High School in 1941 and attended one year of college. He was manager of the former Gilchrist Lumber where he worked for 34 years until his retirement in 1982.

Gilbert was a member of the former First Church of the Nazarene, Steubenville, OH.

He enjoyed woodworking, making several rocking horses and other crafts for family, friends, and others.

Surviving Gilbert are his four sons, Lawrence E. Sterling (companion Sharon Weldon) of Brilliant, OH, Roger D. Sr. (Susan) Sterling of Franklin, WV, Gilbert L. (Lola) Sterling of Brilliant, OH, and Norman L. (Joyce) Sterling of Brilliant, OH and several grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great grandchildren.

The family would like to thank both Sienna Skilled Nursing and Rehabilitation as well as Buckeye Hospice for the care they provided for their father.

Friends will be received at the Wheeler Funeral Home, 712 Third St., Brilliant, OH on Thursday from 3:00 p.m. until the time of his funeral service at 5:00 p.m. with Pastor Todd Miller, officiating. Private burial at Fort Steuben Burial Estates in Wintersville, OH.

In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be directed to Alzheimer’s Association, P.O. Box 96011, Washington DC 20090-6011.
