It’s the result of Iran’s closure of the Strait of Hormuz – a waterway through which around a fifth of the world’s oil passes through – which has caused volatility in oil markets.
To offset the rising costs, several airlines are increasing the price of tickets by adding a surcharge on top of the base fare.
“One of the greatest costs for an airline is the fuel that’s required to transport travellers to destinations,” Anita Emilio, executive vice president of Flight Centre Canada, told National Post.
