Howard R. Hart Jr. Niskayuna - On October 20, 2025, Howard R. Hart, Jr., 95, died at his Glen Eddy home. He was born December 6, 1929, in Fayetteville, NC, the son of Howard R. Hart and Elisabeth Stover Hart.

In 1952 Howard graduated from Cornell University with a degree in Engineering Physics. He then worked at Dupont for two years, studying the properties of plastics. At the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign, he earned a PhD in physics. His thesis involved the study at extremely low temperatures of quantum fluids. It was at Illinois that he met then married Emily Sawyer, a fellow graduate student.

Upon getting his degree in 1960, Howard joined the GE Research Laboratory in Schenectady, NY. This was to be his home for his entire technical career. His research topics were diverse, including superconductivity, experiments with the Apollo Space Program, and the development of MRI medical imaging. His work took him to Fermi Lab and to medical colleges across the country. He enjoyed his time at GE, finding it exciting and challenging.

His work was recognized by several awards: fellowship in the American Physical Society, the GE Coolidge Fellowship, IPO Inventor of the Year for work on using MRI to display blood flow in the brain, and being elected a member of the National Academy of Engineering.

Howard often had a mischievous glint in his eyes. He never stopped loving to learn and to share his knowledge; just a few months before he died, he gave a talk at Glen Eddy on the future of fusion energy.

Outside of work, his interests included hiking, skiing, canoeing, birding, and sailing. Howard passed his love of the outdoors to his children, taking the family to the Adirondacks most weekends. He was active in the Adirondack Mountain Club and the Saratoga Lake Sailing Club. He was also a member of the board of trustees of the Schenectady Museum (miSci). In retirement, Monday mornings were spent discussing the state of the world with friends.

Howard has made an anatomical gift to Albany Medical College.

He is predeceased by his brother, Philip G. Hart. In addition to Emily Sawyer Hart, his wife of 67 years, Howard is survived by daughters Evelyn Hart (Adger Williams), Alice McGovern (Patrick), and Susan Riley Hart, as well as grandchildren Simon and Sam Williams and Joseph, Gregory, and Brendan McGovern.
