India and the United States have progressed toward finalising their proposed trade agreement after agreeing on its broad framework. With a joint statement already signed, attention has now shifted to converting the outline into a legally binding pact.
According to Commerce Secretary Rajesh Agrawal, discussions have continued virtually, and the next round will take place in Washington DC. India’s chief negotiator Darpan Jain will lead the delegation to finalise the legal framework.
Sources said both sides are aiming to complete the agreement by March 2026, though flexibility remains on the timeline. Tariff adjustments—from 25% to 18%—are also under consideration and could be approved soon. Officials stressed that while the structure of the trade pact is aligned, the priority now is ensuring the legal agreement reflects those commitments clearly and comprehensively.
