According to a recent report, Maine has ranked as the second-best state in the country for women in 2026.
When you think about what qualities make a state better—or in some cases worse—those opinions can vary from person to person, but this ranking simply reflects the findings and criteria outlined in this specific report.
Those two main categories are Women’s Economic & Social Well-Being and Women’s Health Care & Safety. WalletHub evaluated 25 weighted metrics within those categories, scored each on a 100-point scale, and then calculated a weighted average for each state to determine overall scores and final rankings.
The state also placed 5th in Women’s Preventive Health Care, 13th in Unemployment Rate for Women, and 10th in High School Graduation Rate for Women.
While D.C. is included in the rankings, it’s not technically a state but the nation’s capital, meaning Maine is essentially the second-best state on the list.
