The two National Guard members who were shot in Washington DC, have been named and pictured. They are 20-year-old Specialist Sarah Beckstrom and 24-year-old Staff Sgt. Andrew Wolfe.
The pair were rushed to hospital in critical condition following Wednesday afternoon's shooting, according to Jeanine Pirro, the US attorney for the District of Columbia, who provided an update on Thursday (November 27)
Pirro revealed that the suspect, Rahmanullah Lakanwal, is alleged to have driven across the country to carry out an "ambush-style" attack using a. 357 Smith & Wesson revolver.
The suspect, an Afghan national, is currently facing charges of assault with intent to kill while armed and possession of a firearm during a crime of violence. As for the suspect's motives, Pirro stated that "it's too soon to say".
The charges could be upgraded, Pirro said, adding, “We are praying that they survive and that the highest charge will not have to be murder in the first degree. But make no mistake, if they do not, that will certainly be the charge.”
The 29-year-old suspect, who remains in custody, entered the US in 2021 through Operation Allies Welcome, a Biden administration programme that evacuated and resettled tens of thousands of Afghans after the US withdrawal from the country and the return to power of the Taliban, officials said.
Trump called the attack an "act of terror" and a "heinous assault" on Wednesday. Soon after, US Citizenship and Immigration Services announced it had stopped processing all immigration cases related to Afghan immigrants "indefinitely pending further review".
Pirro said on Thursday that Lakanwal had driven from his home in Bellingham, Washington, to Washington DC, before firing at troops with a .357 revolver.
He was shot during the aftermath and remains in hospital. He will be charged with three counts of assault with intent to kill while armed and possession of a firearm during a crime of violence, the attorney added.
US Attorney General Pam Bondi earlier told Fox News that the victims had come through surgery. "Right now, we will base our charges based on their prognosis," she said.
