FAIRFAX COUNTY, Va. (7News) — Fairfax County police released the body-camera video Thursday showing officers attempting to de-escalate a volatile situation before ultimately opening fire.
The shooting happened on Sept. 28 in the 9700 block of Church Way in Burke.
Investigators said a man was experiencing a mental health crisis when they arrived on the scene. They were called for reports of a man destroying items inside a home using an ax and chainsaws.
See the bodycam video below. Warning: the video contains strong language and may be disturbing to some viewers. Discretion is advised.
In the video, the officers can be heard attempting to negotiate with the man, asking him to come to the end of his driveway and speak with them.
"No, not doing it," the man said in the video. "Tricky, tricky."
Eventually, the man retrieved a blowtorch, visible in the bodycam, from a garage and continued to ignore commands.
"We just want to keep talking to you," the officer can be heard saying in the video.
After some more conversation, the man finally throws down the blowtorch before retreating into the garage.
Officers can be seen in the video using this opportunity to pick up a pair of chainsaws before the man could return.
