PUPILS from a North East education trust have been broadening their horizons by making the most of a Government-backed international learning scheme.

The Turing Scheme, launched by the UK government in 2021, provides funding to help children and adults benefit from international study and global education.

Over the past four years, the scheme has sent students from schools belonging to the Bishop Hogarth Catholic Education Trust all over the world.

Thomas Young, Learning Mentor for St John's Catholic School, in Bishop Auckland, is the Trust’s Turing Scheme manager.

He said: “Like nearly everything in recent years, the cost of school trips has been rising. This was preventing some students from accessing these great opportunities.

“The Turing Scheme presented a fantastic answer to this problem: giving students from all backgrounds the same chance to visit new countries, and making sure these learning experiences really were available to everyone.”

The Turing Scheme was launched in 2021 and is named in honour of Alan Turing, renowned British mathematician, computer scientist, and World War Two codebreaker, and reflects his legacy as an internationalist who studied abroad.
