WASHINGTON (DC News Now) — U.S. Attorney for D.C. Jeanine Pirro met with neighbors in Northeast D.C. Tuesday night for an update on crime in the community.
Pirro answered questions and took notes about problems plaguing the area, everything from violent crime to problems with loitering and prostitution.
The crowd was mostly favorable to Pirro and the federal surge of officers that had been in D.C.
“I need you to help me fight crime. I need you to tell me what the problems are,” Pirro said.
Pirro spent about an hour and a half Tuesday night listening and responding to neighbors.
“We need to have a frank discussion to help her. Help us. We need help there. We’ve had a violent weekend in the city. Violence is unrelenting despite how hard our team is working. And we need all hands on deck,” said Kathy Henderson, former ANC 5D06 commissioner.
Henderson organized the meeting and facilitated the conversation.
“The goal is to make sure that we return to a level of civility. We don’t have that right now,” Henderson said. “We have people getting harmed, children committing crimes, children being harmed. Our citizens are being harmed. That’s unacceptable.”
In the Fifth district, the watch commander said crime was already down 8% percent but with the federal surge, it’s down 15%.
“We are energizing my office to be accountable, to file charges, to do the best they can and to prove cases,” Pirro said.
