Randy Fine Claims Iranian Hackers Targeted Him With Fake Newsmax Interview Phishing Scheme

A potential Iranian state actor attempted to access Republican Florida Rep. Randy Fine’s personal email by posing as a digital media company, the congressman alleged.

Fine told Fox News that the actor disguised the email containing the phishing scheme as a television interview request from right-wing media outlet Newsmax. (RELATED: NYT Forced To Issue Several Corrections After Being Called Out By Trump Official)

The email was spelled “news-max.org,” according to a copy of the communication reviewed by Fox News. The email was opened by Fine’s staffer and contained a request for an interview, along with links that failed to work, Fine claimed.

Fine said the alleged phishing took place “literally the day after combat operations began” in Iran, leading him to believe the timing was not coincidental.

The U.S. Capitol Police (USCP) also told Fine that the email was likely sent from an Iranian state actor, Fox News reported. USCP had sought to schedule a call with the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) Cyber Task Force for further examination, the outlet reported, citing correspondence to Fine.

Police reportedly said they had information suggesting the alleged phishing could have come from the Iranian Revolutionary Guard.

Fine told Fox News that the FBI said they were “familiar with these actors in Iran.”

The personal email account of FBI Director Kash Patel was breached following the launch of Operation Epic Fury.

A source familiar with the matter told Fox News that the FBI had connected with Fine and opened an investigation into the alleged phishing scheme.
