Reps. Goldman, Velazquez co-sponsor bill mandating health screenings of ICE detainees

WASHINGTON, DC — A BILL THAT TWO BROOKLYN CONGRESSMEMBERS HAVE COSPONSORED would require U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement and U.S. Customs and Border Protection to perform an initial health screening on detainees.

House Resolution 7335, which Rep. Raul Rodriguez, Democrat of California, introduced on Tuesday, Feb. 3, and which is now referred to committee, has 73 cosponsors, including eight from New York and two from Brooklyn: Reps. Nydia M. Velazquez, D-07, and Dan Goldman, D-10.

Last year, Goldman, Velazquez and several Congressional colleagues were repeatedly denied access to an immigration detention facility at 26 Federal Plaza, before winning a court ruling in December of 2025 to conduct unannounced inspections. Goldman and other members of the Congressional Oversight Committee found that many detainees had been denied access to basic needs like toilets and showers.

On Feb. 2, 2026, Judge Jia M. Cobb, a federal jurist in Washington, D.C., issued a second ruling barring the administration from blocking surprise Congressional visits.

Several detainees at facilities across the U.S. also had medical conditions requiring attention, according to an ACLU report published on Dec. 17.
