EXCLUSIVE: Roberta Flack, the Grammy-winning star behind “Killing Me Softly with His Song”, is getting the biopic treatment.
The singer songwriter, who was the first solo artist to win Record of the Year at the Grammys, starting with “The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face”, is to be the subject of a scripted feature film from Good Morning America’s Robin Roberts and her Rock’n Robin Productions banner.
Roberts’ production company has secured Flack’s life rights and is developing the film as well as a documentary project based on her life. The newscaster is working closely with Flack’s longtime managers Suzanne Mina Koga and Joan Martin on both projects.
Flack was born in Black Mountain, North Carolina and died earlier this year. Classically trained on the piano from an early age, Flack received a music scholarship at age 15 to attend Howard University. She was discovered while singing at the Washington, DC nightclub Mr. Henry’s by jazz musician Les McCann, and she was immediately signed to Atlantic Records.
Her career got a boost when Clint Eastwood used “The First Time I Ever Saw Your Face”, from her “First Take” record, for the soundtrack of his directorial debut Play Misty for Me.
Rock’n Robin Productions is behind recent projects including ABC and Hulu’s Hurricane Katrina: 20 Years After The Storm with Robin Roberts, Netflix’s A King Like Me and Lifetime’s I Will Survive: The Gloria Gaynor Story.
“Roberta was a trailblazer – powerful and purposeful with her music and intention. From the first note of every song, you feel Roberta’s tender heart and powerful soul through the microphone. She taught us that the softest voice can carry the deepest truth. It’s an honor to help share her remarkable life and legacy with a new generation, as her music continues to move and inspire the world,” said Roberts.
