KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Carter Jensen hit a two-run single to cap a four-run rally in the 10th inning that gave the Kansas City Royals a 7-6 victory over the San Diego Padres. Lane Thomas homered early for the last-place Royals, who stopped a five-game losing streak. Jensen and Michael Massey each had three of Kansas City’s 13 hits. Ty France launched a solo homer for the Padres with two outs in the ninth, tying the score at 3. The Royals had an excellent opportunity to win in the bottom half, when Jensen’s double helped them load the bases with nobody out against Mason Miller. But the All-Star closer struck out the next three batters, sending the game to extra innings.

PHOENIX (AP) — Rookie JJ Wetherholt hit a solo homer, Iván Herrera had the go-ahead sacrifice fly in the ninth inning and the St. Louis Cardinals edged the Arizona Diamondbacks 5-4 on Friday night. Masyn Winn had a three-RBI night with a two-run single in the first and a sacrifice fly in the eighth. All-Star Riley O’Brien earned his 25th save despite a eventful bottom of the ninth. He struck out Ketel Marte to end the game. Cardinals right-hander Michael McGreevy gave up two runs, including one earned, on six hits and a walk over 6 1/3 innings.

SOUTHPORT, England (AP) — Ryan Fox has joined the list of players with a major championship scoring record. He became the third player this week to shoot a record-tying 62 at the British Open at Royal Birkdale. Fox started early with minimal wind and took advantage. He made five birdies on the front nine and birdied two of his last three holes. Lucas Herbert and Sam Burns also shot 62 on Friday. There have now been eight rounds of 62 in major championship history, with half of them at Royal Birkdale. Branden Grace first set the record there in 2017.

SOUTHPORT, England (AP) — Bryson DeChambeau has been given a two-shot penalty after his second round at the British Open. That has dropped the American star out of the final group and raised initial doubts about his continued involvement at Royal Birkdale. It was a dramatic late Friday evening development after he shot a 4-under 66. DeChambeau was taken back out to the course and specifically to the fifth hole where footage taken during his round showed him stomping around in high grass to the right of the fairway trying to figure out his shot. DeChambeau was seen in a lengthy, heated exchange with rules officials. He was deemed to have inadvertently improved the area of his intended swing. The two-shot penalty turned his score to a 68.

NEW YORK (AP) — It's unclear how much, if at all, smoke from Canadian wildfires will affect the World Cup final between Argentina and Spain on Sunday. Conditions improved in the New York City area and northern New Jersey on Friday after the air quality was hazardous on Thursday. Rain expected Saturday and the uncertainty about how much smoke will follow is clouding the forecast for kickoff, which is scheduled for 3 p.m. Eastern time in East Rutherford, New Jersey. Spain's Mikel Merino says he and his teammates notice the smoke while outside but are being careful and trying to focus on the game.

BARCELONA, Spain (AP) — Almost two decades ago, photographer Joan Monfort didn’t think much of his photo shoot of a teenage Lionel Messi bathing a cute baby boy in a plastic bathtub. Not until years later when that infant blossomed into Lamine Yamal. Now those images of Messi and an infant Yamal have exploded in popularity in the runup to Sunday’s World Cup final, when Messi’s Argentina will play Yamal’s Spain for the biggest trophy in the sport.

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — Caitlin Clark seemed “bouncy” to Indiana coach Stephanie White before the Fever faced the Seattle Storm. The sharpshooting star not too far removed from a back injury bounced right into the record books — her own, her team’s and the WNBA’s. Clark had the first career 40-point game of her three-year career while helping rally the Fever to a 110-107 victory. She scored 45 points with 10 assists for the first such 40-10 game in WNBA history. The scoring total was a franchise record. Clark had two more career highs by going 17 of 19 on free throws.

ARLINGTON, Va. (AP) — A lawmaker sponsoring a key piece of federal college sports legislation says he believes the bill likely has the support it needs to make it through the upper chamber. Senator Eric Schmitt of Missouri said he thinks the Protect College Sports Act probably has the 60 votes it needs to pass the Senate. Schmitt called the next two weeks critical for the Protect College Sports Act. He said leaders from the Southeastern and Big Ten Conferences, both of which oppose the bill as it is written, have met with the top sponsors to negotiate changes in the bill in an effort to gather their support.

LUBBOCK, Texas (AP) — Texas Tech has signed a 15-year naming rights partnership with digital assets and infrastructure company Galaxy. Terms of the deal announced on Friday were not disclosed. The partnership will begin with the 2026 season. The Red Raiders’ football stadium will be renamed Galaxy Stadium and the partnership will include NIL opportunities for Texas Tech student-athletes. The deal comes on the heels of a tumultuous time at Texas Tech surrounding quarterback Brendan Sorsby. Texas Tech planned to play Sorsby after he transferred from Cincinnati despite admitting to betting on games as a freshman while at Indiana. The quarterback later dropped his legal effort to play this season.
