SNAP funding confirmed for South Dakota

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (Dakota News Now) -The South Dakota Department of Social Services announced Friday afternoon that SNAP funding will move forward on schedule for recipients.

Update: The appellate court announced they were keeping the order to keep SNAP funded in place after this story originally aired.

Funds are planned to be loaded onto EBT cards on November 10. If there are delays, they will be communicated as soon as they are known.

The announcement follows a decision from the Trump Administration that SNAP funding will move forward in November, while an appeals court decides on the most recent filings to halt the funding nationwide.

Having just returned home to South Dakota from Washington, DC, advocating for SNAP funding, the founder of Health and Nutrition First, Jennifer Folliard, described the vibe in the Nation’s Capital.

“A somberness to DC just in general right now and also an undercurrent of urgency,” says Folliard.

Funding for each state involves reaching out to a third-party vendor, which then contacts the USDA for confirmation of funding.

Five states received that confirmation before the rest were put on hold on Friday morning when the Trump administration appealed a lower court’s order to fully fund SNAP benefits.

It’s welcome news to South Dakota SNAP recipients, who can now expect funding to arrive soon.

Gina Plata-Nino, with the Food Research and Action Center, believes the funding should never have gone to the courtroom in the first place.
