TIMELINE: How the National Guard shooting in DC unfolded and what happens now

WASHINGTON (7News) — The Nation’s Capital experienced a grim act of violence just a day before the Thanksgiving holiday, when an Afghan national shot two National Guard soldiers in an ambush-style attack.

Sarah Beckstrom, a guard from West Virginia who was only 20 years old, died from her injuries in a D.C. hospital on Thursday, with her father, Gary, by her side.

Andrew Wolfe, a 24-year-old West Virginia guard, remains in critical condition following the shooting.

As the nation’s top investigators work endlessly to figure out the motive of the gunman, 29-year-old Rahmanullah Lakanwal, we’re looking at what happened from the moment shots were fired to what is expected next.

Around 2:15 p.m. on Wednesday, Beckstrom and Wolfe were on duty near Farragut Square in downtown D.C. when a lone gunman, armed with a .357 Smith and Wesson revolver, opened fire on them.

One of the soldiers was hit and went down. The shooter then “leans over” and strikes the guard again, according to United States Attorney for the District of Columbia, Jeanine Pirro.

Other National Guard troops in the area engaged immediately, neutralized, and subdued the gunman. He was then taken to a local hospital, where he remained under heavy guard.

7News received a tip on the shooting shortly after the guardsmen went down. The Metropolitan Police Department confirmed with us that there had been a shooting near 17th and I Street Northwest, but stopped short of saying who was involved.

ABC News later confirmed information that the victims in the shooting were National Guard members.

Videos from bystanders and people in nearby buildings showed fellow guardsmen attempting life-saving measures on Beckstrom and Wolfe, before they were taken to the hospital.
