WASHINGTON (TNND) — Two senior FBI officials in Washington were demoted and reassigned to FBI headquarters Friday after concerns that the agency was not moving quickly enough to investigate alleged threatening phone calls to Katie Miller, the wife of White House deputy chief of staff Stephen Miller.

The officials, Michael Burgwald and Courtland Rae, led the FBI Washington Field Office’s counterterrorism division. They were not fired, but their reassignment removes experienced counterterrorism leaders from the office.

The White House said FBI leadership concluded the officials were slowing an investigation into serious threats. Washington FBI chief Darren Cox said he made the personnel decision and that FBI Director Kash Patel did not order it. However, Bloomberg reported that Patel was also unhappy with the investigation’s pace.

The Millers and their children moved into military housing last fall after alleged stalking, online sharing of personal information, and threats targeting their Virginia home, according to the White House.
