U.S. to impose 20% toll in Strait of Hormuz

WASHINGTON (Gray DC) - WASHINGTON — President Donald Trump announced the U.S. naval blockade of the Strait of Hormuz is back in effect, and for the first time the U.S. will charge a 20% toll for each ship allowed to pass. Trump said the payment is in exchange for safety in the strait.

Weeks earlier, Iran threatened an identical toll. At the time, Secretary of State Marco Rubio said such a toll violated international law. The United Nations agency tasked with regulating maritime shipping agreed, saying no country has the power to impose such a charge.

Trump addressed the move directly, “47 years in a row they were pushing people around. They’re not pushing us around, we’re pushing them around.”

The blockade and toll announcement comes amid another violent 24-hour period in the region. Iran said it has no plans of backing down, vowing to avenge the death of Ayatollah Khamenei.

Earlier, Trump said peace talks would continue, but neither side has shown signs of compromise.
