Week Ahead in Washington: October 26

WASHINGTON (Gray DC) - This week, President Donald Trump continues his tour of Asia, while the government shutdown ticks on. And, the Federal Reserve meets to discuss interest rates.

President Trump is meeting with key Asian leaders this week, with the main focus being peace talks and trade deals. He’s starting his three-country visit at the Association of Southeast Asian Nations Summit in Malaysia Sunday.

The President then heads to Tokyo Monday for a state visit with new Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi, who assumed office last Tuesday.

South Korea is the next stop for the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation Summit; but all eyes will be on a highly-anticipated meeting between Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping to work on a potential trade deal. It’ll be the first meeting between the two leaders since Trump began his second term.

Rumors have also circulated that President Trump may try and meet with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un in Korea’s Demilitarized Zone, although nothing has been scheduled as of yet.

Back in Washington, the Senate returns to Capitol Hill Monday afternoon as the government shutdown continues. Senators have now voted 12 times on measures to reopen the government, but have failed to get the necessary 60 votes to break a filibuster.

Also this week, the Federal Reserve’s Open Market Committee is set to meet Tuesday and Wednesday, with potential interest rate cuts on the agenda. Experts say it’s likely the committee will cut rates by a quarter point.
