Upon seeing the town name of Dubois, Wyoming, for the first time, most people would pronounce it with its proper French accent and say "Dubuah." (Do-bwah). But the people of the down want you to say "Du-boyz." -- WHY?
It's because, to this day, they are mad at someone, and they are still mad at him to this day, even though he is long dead.
The people of the territory wanted to become an official town. An Idaho Senator, Fred Dubois, a member of the Senate Postal Committee, arrived to help establish a post office in the area in 1899. He asked locals what they wanted to name the town, and they said "Tibo," which was a Shoshoni word.
But the senator thought that the name was just STUPID. When he got back to Washington DC, he named the town after himself. DUBOIS!
Postal Committee Influence: Senator Fred T. Dubois was influential in securing the post office, which was necessary for a formal town name in 1899.
When the residents found out that this was the name of their town, they were NOT HAPPY! So, they decided to do something about it.
To this day, local residents refer to the town as "Du-boyz" (pronounced as spelled), while the Senator's name is typically pronounced "Du-boyce," often as a subtle nod to the frustration behind the naming.
Previous Name: Before the town was officially named Dubois, the locality was sometimes called "Never Sweat" due to a small settlement of tie hacks. To this day, you'll see signs in the town telling you that it is pronounced "Du-boyz" and don't tell them otherwise.
